Band Classes Offered

Beginning Woodwind

Beginning Brass

This class is for students who are totally new to Flute or Clarinet, as well as those who want to play the Saxophone. Even with no prior musical experience, you will be playing amazing songs within just a few weeks!
Join this class to learn a brass instrument, including Trumpet, Trombone, and Tuba. Who would have thought blowing into a metal pipe could be so much fun?!

Concert Band

This is a 2nd-year band for those who have learned the essential skills of performance on a band instrument. The Concert Band gets more performance opportunities than the beginning groups and participates in the District Intermediate Band Festival.

Symphonic Band

This is Orem Junior High's premiere band, and is filled by audition. This group learns to play all kinds of musical styles and performs in many concerts and venues throughout the year, including at the University of Utah's Libby Gardner Hall.

Jazz Band

Want to take your band experience to the next level? You just have to roll out of bed extra early every other day and come have a blast in the early-morning jazz band! Here you will learn advanced jazz and rock styles and how to improvise killer solos.

Choosing an Instrument

Beginning Woodwind instrument choices are:
Flute (Small, beautiful sound, most challenging wind instrument)
Clarinet (Small, beautiful sound, easy and very important)

Beginning Brass instrument choices are:
Trumpet (Medium size, smallest brass instrument, very popular)
Trombone (Large size, cool moving slide, loud and deep)
Tuba (Very large, extra deep sound, most important!)

Reeds for Sax & Clarinet

All Clarinet & Saxophone players should have AT LEAST 3 good reeds in their case at all times. This allows them to "break in" several reeds ahead of time, and have several backup reeds in case their favorite reed breaks or fails. Beginners should get size 2-1/2, and more advanced students should get size 3 reeds.

I recommend Rico Royal (Less Expensive) and VanDoren (Highest Quality) brands of reeds.

You will pay less for reeds when you purchase them BY THE BOX. Local stores that carry reeds include Summerhays Music, and Bert Murdock Music.
